This 1999 Porsche 911 C4 Cabriolet was delivered by local Sonnen Porsche, San Rafael, California on July 7,2000, with 140 miles as documented on Vehicle Identification page of the Porsche Maintenance Manual.  Finished in Mirage Metallic with full leather interior, the car has spent its entire life in California, accumulating only 17,500 miles by its original owner, who used the car minimally in conjunction with several other sports and collectible vehicles in Napa, California.  Included with the car are original delivery and related documents including:

The base price of the Porsche was over $83K with options bringing the total MSPR to over $98,000.00.  The details of each of the option packages are too lengthy to list but can be seen in the photographs of the upgrades that were added to the 911 when it was new.

The Carfax report is completely clean, and the car’s owner indicates that it has had no repainting or accidents.  The car has been owned by the cars original owner with the car showing “Owner 2” due to ownership transfer to his son.

The Porsche 911 C4 is powered by a 3.4-liter flat-six paired with a 5-speed Tiptronic transaxle and a host of standard equipment that can be seen on attached “Window Sticker.” Additional details regarding the history of the “996” Porsche and specifications can be found in the sections below including “History of the 996: and “Specifications.”


The body and exterior trim reflect the cars excellent car and life in California.  Any cosmetic defects are minor and do not detract from the overall appearance of the Porsche.  The paint is excellent with high gloss and the matching hardtop is in excellent condition as the car has been used primarily with the top down.  Minor imperfections include characteristic scrapes under the front lower spoiler, most of which are not visible until the car is viewed on a lift.  The Porsche had a hood ornament installed on the hood by the previous owner and there are two minor holes measuring ¼” that are now covered with small fasteners.  We did not remove them as they add an interesting history to the ownership of the car and could be easily dealt with by the cars new owner if they choose. Other imperfections reflect normal use, and we encourage a close review of our extensive photos.

The convertible top is in very good condition.  The electric top functions as designed as do the other electrical components including the speed activated rear spoiler. A recent mechanical inspection showed no outstanding codes.

The interior is trimmed in black with full leather including the dash and power, fully adjustable seats, both passenger and driver’s sides.  The interior shows well and is free from any major defects including seat rips/tears and does not show the signs of significant wear to the seat bolsters often seen on Porsche 911’s.  The fully leather dash is in good condition with only minor “lifting” of the material in a few areas.  The car also features the Porsche in-dash navigation system, carbon door sills with Porsche insignia, remote 10 CD player, heated seats, climate control, and a Hi-Fi system installed by Porsche.  In early 2021, Marin Car Audio upgraded the amplifier with an XD600/6U2 along with a BT module at a cost of $1,285.44 (receipt included).

The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames an 8k-rpm tachometer, a 175-mph speedometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, voltage, and oil pressure. The digital odometer shows just over 17k miles. Total mileage is supported by the Carfax report and repair/maintenance documents.


The 911 C4 car runs and drives as expected for a Porsche with only 17K one owner miles.  It starts immediately when cold and equally as well once it is fully warmed up.  The engine does not hesitate, and it runs smoothly as it is shifted up and down through the gears. There are no leaks or drivability issues noted.  There is no excessive noise in the driveline, including the transmission and rear end.  The 911 has precise steering and does not pull to the left or right.

The Porsche has been serviced by the delivering dealer since new with the most recent service by the dealer being completed approximately 4K miles ago.  More recently, the car received service by foreign car specialists including an inspection within the past 500 miles on 1/18/21.  At 17,055 miles, the car received the received the following:

  • 60K service including spark plugs, air & cabin filters, drive belt, scan test the systems, fill fluids, and complete inspection of the vehicle.

The above service was completed at a cost of $4,686.51.

Previously, the Carfax documents regular servicing by Sonnen Porsche at approximately 7,800 miles, 8,600 miles, 13,683 miles receiving all recommended service and maintenance.  Additionally, the car has passed smog at every required smog check.

The 996 Porsche was unveiled in 1997. The Carrera was the quickest naturally aspirated Porsche 911 from its times, apart from the GT3 versions, which were track-focused vehicles. The main advantage of the 911 was that it was a true, daily-driver, sports-car. It was the first water-cooled 911.

The main difference between the 1998 Carrera and the facelifted version was that on this model, the turn-signals were placed at the bottom of the headlights along with larger, uniquely shaped front headlights.  From the side, the flush bodywork, without any enlargements for the wheel-arches, offered a clean look.

Inside, the car was fitted as standard with a stereo and air-conditioning. It was the first Porsche 911 with a center stack. While the base car was not heavily optioned, the list of available options was extensive and could add a substantial amount to the based price of the car. The standard seats could have been upgraded to power-adjustable leather seats and even a full leather interior with heated seats. Navigation and rare (in 1997) parking assist were also available as options along with a long list of items to tailor the car to the owner’s needs. Another pair of seats were installed in the back provided storage space or room for pets or small passengers.

Under the engine lid, there was a newly developed flat-six engine that offered 300 hp. It was mated as standard with a six-speed manual. A 5-speed automatic (Tiptronic) with manual override to shift gears was on the options list. Offered as an optional, upgraded model was the C4, an all-wheel drive version on the 911.  The car was offered in coupe or convertible configuration and a hardtop coupe be purchased as optional equipment.
