This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was purchased by the current owner in 2017. At the time of the purchase the independent inspection (attached) shows the mileage at the time as 92,598. Fewer than 500 miles have been added during under the current ownership. Power is from a numbers-matching 2.8L inline-six mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The car is finished in Grey Blue (906) with a blue canvas convertible top and a hardtop matching the body color. The 280SL retains the optional factory issued rear seating or “jump seat”. The interior was refurbished in 2017 in the proper contrasting factory color of Pergement with MB Tex material (255). The wood trim on the dash and center console was refinished, reportedly at the time of the restoration.
Equipment includes a removable factory Pagoda hardtop, four-wheel disc brakes, aftermarket A/C, power steering, an in-dash Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW, and a Sony radio mounted below dash on the left side of the Moto-Lita wooden steering wheel. The car was repainted approximately 15 years ago at which time the car received new rubber and other trim. This W113 is offered with a hardtop, stand and cover, original steering wheel, new spare black soft top, an owner’s manual, literature, a tool kit and jack, a copy of the data card, partial service records, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
Refurbishment included a complete interior refreshing in its original color of Pergement (576). Exterior features include a replacement dark blue cloth convertible top replaced in 2017, dual polished exhaust outlets, and a chrome grille surround, bumpers, and trim. Rust bubbles can be seen on the lower rear valance.
The 14″ steel wheels wear hubcaps with body-color centers and are mounted with Milestar Touring whitewall tires with date codes 42/16. A full-size spare wheel/tire and cover and a factory tool kit are in the trunk. Work completed within the last 500 miles includes transmission pan gasket replacement and an oil/filter change
The cabin is trimmed in Pergement MB-Tex (576) with matching door panels and replacement carpets. The body-color dashboard features a black upper pad as well as wood. Other equipment includes an analog clock (non-working), manual wind-up windows, a glovebox, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio (working intermittently).
Chrome-ringed VDO instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, engine temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows just under 93K miles with fewer than 500 miles added by the current owner. Mileage is reported as actual, but represented as TMU (Total Miles Unknown) due to the age of the Mercedes.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six features Bosch mechanical fuel injection with power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission.
