This 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible was delivered new to Portland, OR and has remained on the West Coast since new. The car reportedly has been in California for over 20 years and was acquired by the current owner in August, 2019 as a gift for his wife in memory of a previous ’72 VW convertible she owned years ago.
The VW carries the factory issue “Certificate” supporting the cars original VIN # and that it was manufacture in desirable Marina Blue (code L54D). Additional details reflect the cars manufacture date of 11/11/71 with a delivery date of 11/19 1971. Equipment (listed as “Special Configuration) on the certificate includes: M002 – USA sealed beam headlights, M027 – Compliance with US West Coast emission regulations, and M128 – Whitewall tires. The car was produced in its current color of Marina Blue with a black interior but, during the cosmetic restoration, received a completely new interior in white along with a white convertible top with glass rear window. The car was painted by the previous owner in the factory color of Marina Blue and, at some time during the cars life or restoration received the benefit of upgraded rear fenders and larger taillights as found on 1973 and later Super Beetles.
It has benefited from an aftermarket steering wheel, chrome wheels and hubcaps, and an updated JVC in dash KD-R200 CD receiver and AM/FM radio.
Power comes from a 1600cc flat-four that is paired with a 4-speed manual transaxle, and recently installed authentic VW dual carburetors with proper oil bath filters sourced from a VW Squareback and totally rebuilt. The current owner has put fewer than 500 miles on the car since extensive work was performed by a VW specialist Current mileage is 4,857 but is being represented as TMU (Total Miles Unknown) due to the age of the VW.
A repaint in the original Marina Blue was carried out by the previous owners, and has held up very well with no notable chips or scratches.
The interior is finished in replacement white leatherette with two-tone door cards and black carpet. An updated Kenwood radio is installed on the center dash.
The aftermarket four-spoke steering wheel presents well, and a solitary speedometer with fuel gauge is present on the dash.
Recent work since December, 2019 and less than 500 miles included a complete evaluation and extensive repairs by a long time VW specialist. Specifically, the VW received the benefit of totally rebuilt Type 3 carburetors with new Brosol throttle bodies, complete tune-up, oil service, new muffler and related parts, rockers & pushrods replaced, rebuilt braking system, new fresh air hoses and heater work, adjust steering box, new fuel items including sending unit and rebuilt fuel tank, new shift bushings, replace handbrake cables, wheel cylinders and inspect brakes, replace seat tracks, and more totaling $5,654.00 in detailed invoices.
Included with the sale is a clear California title in the owner’s name, the original VW certificate from the VW factory, original owner’s manual, date coded 12/1971, the original Emission Control System Warranty booklet and receipts for the recent comprehensive maintenance.
